Marissa Mayer: #Women in #Tech

Marissa Mayer on Women in Tech

In the video linked above, Marissa Mayer talks about the expanding field of technology & growing interest from young women.

As an educator and the mother of three daughters, two who love all things technology, I do see more girls interested in technology. We must work to continue to break down the stereotypes that keep girls from pursuing this interest. Here are some tips for doing just that:

1. Provide all children with opportunities to tinker, build, and create with technology.

2. Talk to all children like they are “makers” or creators rather than just consumers of technology.

3. Look for chances to introduce children to men and women who work in the technology field.

4. If someone says “that’s just for boys” or “you wouldn’t like this, you’re a girl,” provide a response that challenges that assumption.

The technology field is growing, and so are the opportunities for girls and boys. Let’s encourage all children who show an interest to pursue it. They can be makers, creators, world changers!
