Sayreville Football Case: It’s rape, not hazing

You know what should be in our blood in every town? Standing up for our children and their well-being, putting our humanity before all else. Otherwise, we perpetuate a space for abusers to continue to prey on the real innocents. When we love a game more than we love the children whom the game has failed, we need to readjust priorities and wipe the slate clean. To do anything else leaves our children at risk.

Why “Yes Means Yes?”

Teaching our children and adolescents to be thoughtful about consent and mutuality in all of their physical relationships can only provide them with effective skills for sexual behaviors later in life. We want kids to know how to ask for consent and how to give or withhold consent in a clear way.

Maryville, Steubenville, Anywhereville: Talking with Kids about Consent and Sexuality

We must begin talking about the concept of consent. We need to be sure that adolescents understand what consent means, in which situations one can never assume consent, and how to seek help when they or someone else is having their right to consent violated. It’s up to adults to be sure that every child is taught that there are no “blurred lines.” No means no, and when someone is incapacitated for any reason, they cannot give consent. That’s all there is to it.
